Match Report | Dale 0-1 Leyton Orient

13 September 2022

Dale were beaten by table toppers Leyton Orient 1-0 at the Crown Oil Arena on Tuesday night.

George Moncur’s first-half goal proved to be the difference, although Scott Quigley saw an injury time penalty saved by O’s goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux.

In his first home match in charge, Dale boss Jim Bentley made three changes from the side that started the 3-3 draw at Carlisle United.

Abraham Odoh, Jimmy Keohane and Ian Henderson came in for Femi Seriki, Liam Kelly and Tyrese Sinclair.

The Crown Oil Arena fell silent for a moving tribute to Her late Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, before a rousing rendition of the National Anthem.

Dale had a couple of half-chances in the opening exchanges, with James Ball sending a looping volley over after a corner to the back-post, before Scott Quigley fired another volley over from 25-yards.

Orient began to create chances of their own with Tom James firing a first-time effort over from 20-yards, before Richard O’Donnell pulled off a stunning save, clawing away a Ruel Sotiriou effort one-handed.

The visitors scored the decisive goal ten minutes before the break. Some quick movement in the final third left to them finding Moncur in a one-on-one position and he fired into the top corner.

O’Donnell again just before the break to turn behind a Paul Smyth’s low effort, before Ball saw a low shot held by Vigouroux.

Orient substitute Aaron Drinan had a powerful effort saved by O’Donnell before Sam Graham looped a header over the bar from a Dale corner.

Tyrese Sinclair, Femi Seriki and Tahvon Campbell, featuring the first time in six months after a foot injury, were all introduced by Bentley as Dale chased a point.

And in the fourth minute of injury time Sinclair earned a golden opportunity to do so, reading an Orient header back to the goalkeeper, which he got to first before being brought down by Vigouroux.

Quigley stepped up but saw his low effort saved to the goalkeeper’s right, as the visitors held on for all three points.

Dale XI | O’Donnell, Keohane, Graham, McNulty, White, Diagouraga, Ball, Odoh, Rodney, Henderson, Quigley.
