Lee Thorpe Returns As YDP Lead Coach

16 September 2022

We are pleased to announce that former player Lee Thorpe has taken up a coaching role in the Rochdale Academy.

The ex-Dale front man has taken up the role of Youth Development Phase Lead Coach.

He had previously held the same position at Blackpool, another of his former clubs.

“I had a chat with Tony Ellis [Academy Manager] about the plans for the Academy and how I could fit in,” said the 46-year-old.

“I had been a support worker for the past six months which I enjoyed, but the Academy is very well ran, I liked what I heard and ultimately football is a part of me, so I couldn’t turn it down.

“I enjoyed my time here during my playing career. The team was successful on the pitch and they supported me through some difficult times, to be honest.

“Everyone has made me feel so much at home and I know people at the club from my time here. It’s somewhere I always enjoy coming back to.”

Tony Ellis commented: “We’re delighted to welcome Lee back to the Football Club.

“He is a fantastic acquisition to the Academy, not just for his experience as a professional footballer, but also his ten years of experience working in youth development.

“He will be a huge asset helping with the development of the staff and players in the Academy.”

Thorpe appeared 44 times for Dale and scored seven goals between January 2008 and June 2009, during which time we reached the League Two playoffs in successive seasons.

Welcome back, Thorpey!
