FA Youth Cup Report | Shrewsbury Town 1-2 Dale

16 November 2022

Dale advanced to the third round of the FA Youth Cup with a 2-1 victory away to Shrewsbury Town.

Paul Kyffin put Dale ahead in the first-half before Nathaniel Muenda equaliser for Salop midway through the second period.

However, with little over ten minutes to play, Oscar Kelly restored Dale’s lead, which they held on to superbly.

Kevin Dos Santos headed a Max Sutton free-kick wide early on, but the first half an hour lacked chances for either side.

However, in the 15-minute period before the break, Dale began to turn the screw.

Darren Ehimamiegho saw a deflected effort come back off the foot of the post and into the arms of the goalkeeper, before Kyffin opened the scoring.

A ball from the right came across low to the midfielder who fired a left-foot shot home from the edge of the area.

He then hit another well-struck effort narrowly over, this time from over 30-yards, before Sutton hit wide of the far post from just outside the area.

Oscar Kelly had the final chance of the half, getting down the left side of the area before seeing a shot beaten away by Shrews goalkeeper Reece Thompson.

The hosts had the first chance of the second-half when Nana Owusu fired wide from inside the area, before Jesus tested the goalkeeper at the other end from 20-yards.

Substitute Travis Hernes headed wide for Shrewsbury, before Muenda rattled the crossbar from the edge of the area, with Peter Batozzi having a follow-up blocked.

They equalised midway through the second-half when Muenda slotted home at the near post from inside the area.

However, ten minutes later, Kelly restored Dale’s lead. Jesus picked up on a flick on and fed Kelly on the left. He drove into the area before firing a left foot shot across goal and off the inside of the far post.

Joe Cunningham hit an effort of the far post from distance before the hosts piled on the pressure late on.

Ellis Craven saved a header from James Warner before getting a touch on a cross from the left. The rebound fell for Peter Bartozzi who was denied by a fine block from Sutton.

Halim Barke saw a header palmed away by Craven and the hosts then saw a header from a free-kick go wide, as Dale held on to advance to the third round.
