FA Youth Cup Report | Dale 1-1 York City (4-2 pens)

1 November 2022

Dale advanced to the second round of the FA Youth Cup with a penalty shootout victory over York City.

Darren Ehimamiegho put Dale ahead midway through the first-half at the Crown Oil Arena, before Alex Hernandez equalised before the break.

Dale created numerous chances in the 120 minutes but couldn’t find a winner, sending the tie to a shootout.

Ellis Craven saved York’s first penalty before they missed their second, whilst Dale converted all four of their spot kicks to secure passage through to the next round.

The home side began brightly with Liam Anderson and having a shot from distance saved and another blocked in the area.

The deadlock was broken in the 19th minute when Ehimamiegho pounced on a rebound following a saved effort from Brooklyn Bailey, slotting into a mostly empty net.

The goalscorer then had an effort saved by Michael Hogan, before Joel Street’s cross-shot took a deflection and bounced off the upright.

The visitors bagged an equaliser three minutes before the break when a free-kick into the area fell for Hernandez, who swept home into an empty net from six-yards.

There were claims for a foul on Craven as the delivery came into the area, when he was challenged by a York player, but the referee waved the claims away.

Dale made three subs seven second-half minutes after the break, as Ehimamiegho, Nile Ayub and Anderson were replaced by Anisio Jesus, Isaac Burgess and Jadel Yaduat.

Joe Cunningham had an effort well held by Hogan, before a John Dunlop effort, plus several from Yaduat, went wide.

There wasn’t much in extra-time for either side, with Harley Dawson heading wide for York and Dunlop seeing an effort from distance saved.

In the shootout, Craven dived to his left to save George Harrison’s spot kick, before Kieran Clayton sent their second effort wide.

Dunlop, Cunningham and Zak Greenwell all converted for Dale, before Jesus slotted home the winning penalty, to send Dale through to the next stage.

They will now travel to Shrewsbury Town in the second round, who beat Sutton Coldfield 6-0 tonight.

Dale XI | Craven, Cunningham, Sutton, Dunlop, Watts, Ayub, Anderson, Kyffin, Street, Bailey, Ehimamiegho.
