Youth Team Report | Shrewsbury Town 1-1 Rochdale

28 March 2022

The Youth Team gained a point on the road on Saturday, following a 1-1 draw with Shrewsbury Town.

Cameron Kyle’s brilliant first half header was cancelled out by a second half Shrews penalty.

Dale started the game brightly and dominated possession before Bassett Mandey fired a 20-yard strike at the ‘keeper.

Rochdale then came inches from opening the scoring but were denied by some last-ditched defending. Ben Kershaw’s corner found Peter Thomas at the back post but his shot was kept out on the line.

Dale went on to break the deadlock on 21 minutes. Kyle met Kershaw’s corner, heading home in superb fashion from 12-yards.

Shortly after the hour, Ellis Craven pulled off a brilliant save from a corner to keep Dale ahead.

Before the half was out, Paddy Watts sent a header narrowly wide.

Goalscorer Kyle was forced off injured early after the break and replaced by Jesper Laurence.

A big chance to extend the lead came and and went in the 56th. Darren Ehimamiegho did really well on the right hand side to find Thomas who was six yards out but he couldn’t quite make the connection to fire home.

Another opportunity came moments later when Mandey got in on goal, but the goalkeeper came out to clear the danger.

On the hour, Craven made a good save low to keep out a free-kick.

Soon after, the Shrews equalised from the penalty spot to level the scoring.

Chances were few and far between for the remainder of the half, although Thomas did fire just inches wide of the upright shortly after Shrewsbury scored, and the spoils were shared.

Dale XI | Craven, Cunningham, Watts, Kyle, Sutton, Kershaw, Mandey, Kyffin, Ehimamiegho, Thomas, Jesus. Subs | Caldwell, Laurence, Lawless, Greenwell.
