Gaffer's Post-Match Reaction - Carlisle United Victory

30 March 2022

Manager Robbie Stockdale on Dale’s 2-0 win over Carlisle United at the Crown Oil Arena…

“I’m pleased. [It was a] good performance and I felt we played very well in the first half. [It was] sort of complete dominance of game,” said the Gaffer.

“We did the basics which we ask for every game better than Carlisle and then in the second half it’s a different game. There’s a little bit of nervousness and anxiety because you’re defending a little bit more, but I thought that the players stood up to that challenge superbly well and I thought there were some standout performances across the pitch.

“The players left it all out there tonight, which I asked for, and deservedly won the game, in my opinion.”

After the weekend’s defeat to Crawley Town, Stockdale said he was going to come out fighting and called on the players to do it with him, and he believes they did that on Tuesday night.

“Without a shadow of a doubt. I’m that way inclined anyway - you have to be to get to the level that you want to. I did that as a player and I don’t intend to stop that now as manager. The players need to follow that and follow me, and tonight they did.

“With the enjoyment and happiness that comes from tonight, and we will enjoy it, we’ve had some difficult moments as well and we need to follow it up, and that’s the challenge to the players again.

“There’s no point in just doing it for a one off game - this needs to be the mantra for our football club, that we fight and we scrap when we need to. But we have quality because you see the level of play sometimes, it’s really good to watch.”

And the Boss was full of praise for the whole team.

“I felt that we started the game really, really well and it’s nice to score when you’re on top - we probably could have had a couple more goals.

“In the second half, as I’ve said, it’s a different game. They’re obviously going to come onto you - with long throws and putting balls into the box - but the defenders, Jay Lynch and everyone contributed to it [the win].

“You can see Luke Charman at the end - my plan was to try and take him off to give him a breather because he had ran his race, but then Eoghan [O’Connell] gets a little bit of a hamstring injury so someone else goes on.

“But it’s a collective and we use the squad. We’re down on numbers now which is obviously a problem going into the weekend, but we’ll enjoy tonight then focus on the next game.”
