Gaffer's Post-Match Reaction - Sutton United

6 March 2022

Manager Robbie Stockdale on Dale’s 3-0 defeat away at Sutton United…

“It was a very tough day and we were deservedly beaten,” said the Gaffer.

“I knew it was going to be a very physical game. That’s just the way Sutton play and we knew how they’d play, and the game went, in terms of the game plan, exactly how I felt it would do - long balls into our box and long throws, and when we did have moments of possession they’d drop back in and defend the edge of the box. We weren’t strong enough in the moments that we needed to be and we weren’t bright enough or intelligent enough to break them down.”

The hosts took a 2-0 lead into the break, before adding a third shortly before the hour.

“[For the first, they broke on us and it was a transition. We missed a couple of opportunities to either break that attack down or clear our lines. The free-kick is a good free-kick but it should never get to that point. The momentum of goals change games massively and the goal before half-time did that as well.

“It [the third goal] makes it very difficult, considering we hadn’t had many opportunities to score before that.

“It’s a horrible day. It’s not nice for our supporters who have made the long trip to come and watch that, and we accept that.

“I’m here to fight and I’m here to get better. We find ourselves in a bit of a dog fight and you don’t have a dog fight with kittens. Certainly we need to show a little bit more strength on the pitch in those 1v1 moments, and we find ourselves in a very difficult place in the division as well.”

Dale now have back-to-back homes games (Barrow AFC on Saturday 12th March and Salford City on Tuesday 15th March before heading back to London to face Leyton Orient on Saturday 19th March).

“We use [the game against Sutton] as motivation,” added Stockdale.

“We’ve got some good home games coming up - games that we’re more than capable of taking points from. It’s funny, our contrasts of emotions from last week when we won seven points from nine was strong, whereas this week it’s not good.

“I’ve spoken all the way throughout the season about consistency and the players need to try and find that from somewhere, because I change it around and I pick what I feel is a very physical team to match Sutton and, truth be told, in certain moments it didn’t match up like that.”
