Gaffer On Carlisle United Defeat

2 March 2022

Manager Robbie Stockdale on Dale’s 2-0 defeat to Carlisle United, on an evening when his side were left to rue missed opportunities…

“It’s a frustrating evening,” said the Gaffer.

“I’m going to sound a bit daft, I guess, when I think we played quite well.

“People who weren’t here will see the result and that we got beat easily at 2-0 but that wasn’t really the case stood on the touchline.

“I felt lots of our play was decent but we need a reliability to our game that we lack in at times. Off the top of my head, I think we’ve created three clear cut chances and then another two or three half chances after that, so that’s disappointing obviously.

“We felt that we were confident and in good form, and we started the game really well and gave them all sorts of problems. We give away a silly free-kick and unfortunately a mistake leads to their goal, and from then on they’ve got something to hold on to.

“I haven’t seen the data or the stats but I would suggest that we had the majority of the play and the majority of the play in their final third, and the ‘keeper has made two or three fantastic saves.

“So, we’re very disappointed in the result but we can better in the performance. However, overall, we should be getting something out the game.”

Carlisle’s opener came against the run of play whilst Dale were on top, and Stockdale says that’s why it’s important you take your chances.

“That’s the game - you’ve got to take your chances when you’re on top. I said to Jimmy [Shan] next to me that we could do with a goal while we were so on top because we were dominant in the league.

“We had three or four good passages of play but unfortunately we didn’t take the chance and that’s down to us so we’ve got ourselves to blame on that front. And obviously the goal to concede isn’t great either, so it gives you a mountain to climb.

“Then in the second half you’re open, which suits them a touch, and then we get control again. But the second goal comes when we’re pushing players forward and we’d never normally leave a 1v1 at the halfway line. The player took it quite well, so I can swallow that one, but, to be honest, it is ultimately a 2-0 defeat when it shouldn’t have been.”

And the Gaffer says he’s looking for reliability in person as they move forward now towards Saturday’s game at Sutton United.

“I’ve just asked the players there for reliability. If we became more reliable with the play that we produce, then we’ve got half a chance, but it’s another occasion that’s very similar to quite a few games this year that we’ve just come up short. This place didn’t need any encouragement with Simmo [Paul Simpson] coming back for his first home game, and we gave them it.

“The message is get better. Get better at those end bits. I hate being unlucky losers and if that’s what we are today then it’s the worst feeling because it means that you’re doing good bits but you’re not winning. Let’s be right, we’ve had a good run as well, it’s just very disappointing that it has ended here tonight.”
