Gaffer Post-Crewe Alexandra

31 July 2022

Manager Robbie Stockdale reflects on Dale’s 2-1 opening day defeat to Crewe Alexandra…

“Obviously I’m very disappointed to lose the game. We actually felt on the touchline that we started ok in the match and then it’s almost like the first goal gives us a right wobble. The remainder of the first half wasn’t quite what we want and what we know we’re capable of.

“For their first goal, Cameron [John] gets a block - it’s well worked by then but I’d like us to be a bit smarter and not be too naive to that. The second one is unfortunately a deflection, so that sort of had our backs against the ropes, but James Ball’s got two really good opportunities to score as well after good play.

“There was a little regroup at half-time and I thought we played well in the second half. We scored a deserved goal and I was hoping for a bit of a grandstand finish. But Crewe managed the game from there pretty well.

“It’s very disappointing but seasons aren’t made on the first game. We had seven debutants if you class Ian [Henderson] and Ethan [Ebanks-Landell] as returning debutants, so hopefully people saw that there was maybe enough to kick on this season, but it’s obviously disappointing to lose your first home game.”

The gaffer continued: “I didn’t think we were a great version of ourselves [in the first half]. We want to play with more energy than we did, both with and without the ball, and I thought we did that in the second half.

“I’m actually disappointed that we haven’t drawn the game, because I thought we did enough. I think there could be a penalty on James Ball - I’ve seen it back and it easily could be, and I think if he gives a foul of Tyrese [Sinclair], which is 100% a foul, I think he gives a penalty as well because it was right on the borderline of 18-yard box. So, I feel little bit aggrieved about that.

“Their ‘keeper has made a fantastic from Bally as well, and we’ve had balls bouncing in their box. But hard luck stories are no good to anybody - we’ll dust ourselves down and hopefully have a good week on the training pitch.”
