Match Report | Rochdale 3-3 Harrogate Town

12 February 2022

Tahvon Campbell struck a late equaliser on Saturday, as Dale came from behind to secure a point at home to Harrogate Town.

Town had taken an early lead, after just three minutes, but Max Clark netted with 19 minutes on the clock to draw Dale level. The visitors regained the lead before the interval from the penalty spot, before extending their advantage a couple of minutes after the restart. Abraham Odoh pulled one back shortly after coming on as a substitute and Campbell ensured a share of the points two minutes from time.

Harrogate opened the scoring with just three minutes on the clock, when Pattison lashed a shot into the roof of the net from just inside the area.

Moments after going behind, Conor Grant capitalised on a Sulphurites mistake in the middle of the park to send Alex Newby on his way. After Tahvon Campbell initially denied at source, the ball fell for James Ball who got a toe to it, only to see his effort turned round the upright by Mark Oxley.

The visitors then hit Dale on the break and Joel Coleman was forced to keep out Jack Diamond, before, up the other end, Captain Eoghan O’Connell sent a volley wide, in a lively start to the game.

And Rochdale equalised in the 19th minute through Clark, who netted his first goal for the club. Newby was initially denied by the upright, as his shot from an acute angle came back off the base of the post. After Dale kept the move alive, Grant had a shot charged down on the edge of the area which fell for Clark. His shot was initially kept out by the post but it rolled along the goal line, bounced off the other and in.

Oxley then dived to his left to push behind a Newby free-kick from range. From the resulting corner, Tahvon Campbell hit a shot on the turn wide of the target.

Harrogate regained their lead soon after, from the penalty spot. After Liam Kelly brought down George Thomson, Pattison converted from 12-yards.

Shortly before the half hour, Campbell had an opportunity to put Dale level, but having rose highest to meet Stephen Dooley’s ball in from the right, he could only head wide of the target.

Before the half was out, Diamond saw a low shot deflected wide of the far post, while Coleman got down to hold Pattison's shot. He then came out to throw his body in the way of Diamond’s effort, diverting it over the bar.

There was one change for the start of the second half, as Abraham Odoh came on for Kelly.

Harrogate extended their lead two minutes after the restart. They hit Rochdale on a quick counter-attack and Diamond struck home into the far bottom corner.

Dale then enjoyed a spell on top before pulling one back.

Clark had a free-kick beaten away by Oxley and then had a shot from 25-yards deflected behind.

Before the full-back was in again, Coleman pulled off an important save to Diamond's near-post effort wide. Clark was again kept out by the ‘keeper. From Newby’s cross to the back post, he turned an effort goal wards, but it was beaten away.

The goal finally came on 61 minutes. Newby showed great strength to win the ball off Warren Burrell before pulling it back to Dooley. He squared to Odoh, who slides it into an empty net.

After the goal, it was a fairly even affair, and Coleman held onto Brahima Diarra's left footed shot from the edge of the area.

Dale’s second substitution of the mach followed in the 81st minute, as Luke Charman replaced Grant, and Rochdale rallied again and they were in again. Campbell had a shot charged down, but he went to open his Rochdale account with two minutes left to play, to secure a point for the side.

Charman and Clark combined to get the ball to Campbell in the area, and he lashed one past Oxley for the equaliser!
