Gaffer On Forest Green Rovers Defeat

9 February 2022

Manager Robbie Stockdale on Dale’s late defeat to Forest Green Rovers at the New Lawn…

“I’m so angry. I’m so angry with our performance,” said the Gaffer.

“We go 1-0 up and we stop doing the things that got us into that position. The goals [conceded] - it would be unfair on schoolboys if I said they were schoolboy errors. They were poor and you can’t give a very good team that was full of confidence those chances. It makes it extremely difficult for yourself.

“I don’t know if it’s a mentality thing. Forest Green are a good team and they’re certainly going to have spells and in the main, yes, we had to defend, but I don’t remember too many chances until we made mistakes.

“At this level against a team like Forest Green, you can’t make those mistakes, because quite rightly you get punished. It’s a very frustrating way to lose a game of football because it was all of our own doing.”

Stockdale continued: “I’ve just said to the players there, at 1-0 up I don’t get why we stop playing football - we stop pressing and we stop passing forward, and there’s no instruction from the sideline to do that.

“They [Forest Green] are going to have a spell in the game and you have to defend properly and on the main we were doing that. I would say that our lack of football in the last couple of weeks hasn’t helped us - we looked a bit leggy.

“To come to the top of the table and lose the way we did but the manner in which we did - because once we go 2-1 down we start playing again - can only be a mentality thing for me.”

The Boss added: “I’ve just told the players, we need to roll our sleeves up. There’s no point everybody and their manager coming off the pitch and telling us what a great team you’ve got and you’re in a false position - we need to win. We need to get some wins.

“I look at myself after every game, win, lose or draw, and I’ve told the players that they need to as well because performances have come away from what I expect from them.

“There’s certainly no panic stations, because you panic and say things in the heat of the moment and you can be quite emotional.

“But we’ll review as we always do and, in the cold light of day, we’ve come to a team at the top of the table who are flying and we’ve let them off the hook.”
