Report | Doncaster Rovers 4-3 Dale

29 December 2022

Dale were on the wrong end of a seven-goal game at Doncaster Rovers, losing 4-3 after twice coming back from behind.

Goals from Charlie Seaman and Ben Close put the hosts two goals to the good inside the opening ten minutes, before Devante Rodney and an own goal levelled for Dale just six minutes later.

Harrison Biggins put Rovers back ahead before the break direct from a free-kick and after Dale edged most of the second period, Tyrese Sinclair equalised for a second time.

However, Tom Anderson scored in the final ten minutes to put Doncaster back ahead and secure all three points for the hosts.

Jim Bentley made three changes to the team that started Boxing Day’s defeat at home to Hartlepool United.

Liam Kelly returned from injury, with James Ball and Devante Rodney also coming back in, as Danny Lloyd and Ian Henderson dropped to the bench and Connor Malley out of the squad altogether.

Dale fell behind after just five minutes when a short corner was worked to Seaman, and his shot took a wicked deflection to deceive Richard O’Donnell and find the bottom corner.

The hosts doubled their lead just four minutes later, when George Miller laid off to Close, who curled a superb effort into the far top corner from 20-yards.

A response was needed from Bentley’s men and little over five minutes later, Rodney halved the deficit. The ball was worked to him on the edge of the area and his shot, via a deflection, went in off the inside of the upright.

The equaliser came a matter of minutes afterwards. Cameron John won the ball back on the halfway line and continued his run, before sending a dangerous cross into the area, which was sliced into the back of his own net by Williams.

Miller sent a couple of half-chances off target for Rovers, before they regained their lead, when Biggins curled a free-kick into the top corner from 25-yards.

Abraham Odoh and Ball sent efforts off target as Dale searched for a second equaliser before the break.

Aftert the interval, Dale edged proceedings for much of the half. Scott Quigley saw a shot well blocked before Bentley made changes, introducing Lloyd, Henderson, Sinclair and Jimmy Keohane.

It was Sinclair who drew Dale level for a second time with his first touch, when Kelly’s clipped delivery found the head of the substitute, and he sent a looping header over the goalkeeper.

However, parity was short lived, when a cross into the area wasn’t cleared and fell for Anderson, who turned and fired into the bottom corner from close range.

Dale pushed for a third equaliser but couldn’t carve out a clear opportunity, leaving Doncaster empty handed.

Dale XI | O’Donnell, Seriki, Nelson, Ebanks-Landell, John, Diagouraga, L Kelly, Ball, Odoh, Rodney, Quigley.
