We Need A Response - Bentley

16 December 2022

Jim Bentley says Dale need a response having been beaten at home to Harrogate Town last time out.

His side head to Bradford City in Sky Bet League Two action this Saturday, following a fortnight without a game.

“We had a two-week break leading up to the Harrogate game, coming off the back of a bad result at Sutton,” said Bentley.

“We lost against Harrogate, and it was a poor showing, we weren’t good enough.

“There were no days off after that game. We had them flat out for six days leading up to the Stockport County game, which unfortunately got postponed.

“There were a few home truths. We went through some things visually, on the training pitch, hoping to make us better.

“The game was called off and now we’ve come into this cold spell. We’ve been on the AstroTurf over at Hyde United this week, flat out, preparing for Bradford City at the weekend.

“We need a response from that Harrogate game. To be fair to the lads, they’ve trained quite well.

“It’s a tough place to go, a tough team to play against at the level, but we’ll treat every game exactly the same, that we can go and win it, so Saturday is no different.

“We’re always trying to improve. Whether we do that on the training pitch, whether we do that individually, with regards to one-to-one meetings and trying to get the best out of people.

“We’re not the type of club that can just open the chequebook, go out and do what we want to do. There are players I’ve identified and want to bring in, but we might not be able to do that.

“I appreciate where the club is at, that it’s had off-field issues and how it is a tightly run ship, which is the way I believe it should be.

“Everyone has to cut their cloth accordingly and within the rules. We’ll do what we can in January to try to get us away from where we are.

“I have belief in the players, in certain respects, because we’ve seen at times that we can produce.

“I think it would be right of me to say we’ve been inconsistent. We’ve seen some strong performances at times, but on the flip side of that, I’ve seen signs of concern.

“We’ve got to find ways to improve and win games of football. We’re in a better position than we were when I first came in and we were rooted to the bottom.

“There was one spell when we were four points away from third bottom and we’re now fourth bottom. Now we’ve got to find a way of getting ourselves away from that bottom two, sooner rather than later in an ideal world.”
