Stand Up & Be Counted - Bentley

31 December 2022

Jim Bentley wants his players to stand up and be counted, as we head to Barrow for our first game of 2023 on Monday.

Dale were on the wrong end of a seven-goal game on Thursday night at Doncaster Rovers.

Speaking after that game, Bentley said: “When the going gets tough you’ve got to stand up and be counted.

“I’ll certainly be doing that, and the players have to reflect that. There have been a few harsh words tonight [Thursday] at half-time and after the game.

“We’ve got to do better than what we’ve done. We conceded four goals in a manner that I don’t think I’ve seen before.

“If we could have gone on to win the game from the position we were in, three points would have given everyone a boost.

“It would have given a shot in the arm to the fans, players, board, etc. Football has that tendency, in that once you win one, you’re up and running, looking ahead to the next one.”

A source of frustration for Bentley is the manner of the goals Dale are conceding, especially after some resolute defensive performances earlier in the season.

“We went four wins out of five [September/October] with three clean sheets in that time. We went to Newport who had 71 entries into our box but just three touches.

“In this day and age, there’s stats on individuals and teams, and we were showing up quite well in those areas.

“I was thinking great, we’ve cracked this, with opportunities coming up against the likes of Sutton and Harrogate, other teams in and around us. They were opportunities to get our foot on the gas and get away from where we are.

“Nothing has changed with regards to our preparation. The players get everything in this day and age, which has been mentioned recently, and they have to start giving something back, because we do everything for them.”

A trip to Barrow now awaits on Monday, as Dale look to respond to the recent run of form and begin 2023 on a high.

“We’ve got to keep believing in ourselves and working hard. We’ve got to look over this one, speak about it, then try to find a plan and a way of trying to get three points at Barrow.

“Or if it’s not all three points, then make sure it doesn’t become no points. We want to win every game, but we can’t lose in the manner which we did [on Tuesday].

“If you can’t win it, don’t lose it, and we’ve found a way of losing games at the minute.”
