FA Youth Cup Report | Dale 3-4 Fulham

20 December 2022

Dale came minutes away from an upset in the third round of the FA Youth Cup after a superb performance against Premier League club Fulham.

Two goals in two minutes at the death saw The Lilywhites turn the tie around to run out 4-3 victors.

A goal from Aaron Loupalo-Bi after just three minutes gave Fulham the lead, before a brace from Darren Ehimamiegho turned the game on its head.

Callum Osmand equalised just before the break, but Anisio Jesus’ goal 15 minutes from time looked to have sent Dale through to the fourth round.

However, two goals in two minutes from Loupalo-Bi and Osmand cruelly took the game away from Dale.

It was a nightmare start for Dale, as Loupalo-Bi stole the ball off goalkeeper Ellis Craven on the edge of the Dale area, before converting into the empty net.

George Nevett put a good block in on Callum Osmand’s effort from the edge of the area, diverting it over the bar, before John Dunlop fired over from inside the area after Dale’s high press won the ball back.

The equaliser came when Joe Cunningham intercepted a pass out from the goalkeeper and found Anisio Jesus in midfield. He twisted and turned before finding Cunningham back out wide.

He picked out Ehimamiegho with a low cross, who created a yard of space inside the area and fired home into the far bottom corner.

With less than ten minutes to go before the break, Dale doubled their lead.

Cunningham was again the creator, battling superbly on the halfway line to win the ball back, before driving forward and sliding a perfectly weighted ball through to Ehimamiegho.

He burst on to the pass and poked the ball underneath the advancing goalkeeper to double his tally.

The visitors equalised on the stroke of half-time though, when a cross to the back post was cushioned into the path of Osmand, who volleyed home from the edge of the six-yard box.

The opening stages of the second-half were even, with Paul Kyffin putting an excellent block in on Osmand’s effort and Oscar Kelly seeing an effort deflected wide.

Cunningham sent a volley over from 25-yards after a corner had been partially cleared, before Dale did retake the lead with 15 minutes left.

A low ball in from the left found Jesus with his back to goal, before he span and fired into the bottom corner from the edge of the six-yard box.

Dale continued to battle superbly but three minutes from time, the visitors equalised when Loupalo-Bi kept his composure to slot home from ten-yards out.

Heartbreak for Dale followed two minutes later when Osmand netted his second, glancing home at the near post after a ball had been centered.

The lads threw everything at it during eight minutes of added time and a golden chance fell for Brooklyn Bailey, but he sent over George Nevett’s nod down after a free-kick had been sent into the area.

It wasn’t to be for Dale, but the Youth Team can be proud of their performance and their run to the third round of the competition.
