Gaffer's Pre-Match Thoughts

1 April 2022

Robbie Stockdale hopes his players can take confidence from Tuesday’s win into Saturday’s game at home to Swindon Town.

Dale were 2-0 winners over Carlisle United at the Crown Oil Arena in the first of three consecutive home matches.

“Nothing increases confidence as much as winning and I thought there were some really good performances on the pitch,” said the gaffer.

“It’s obviously the third game in seven days again, so we’ll have to really assess the players to see who’s up to speed.

“We’ve got a decent record at home. We’ve drawn too many which is obvious, but we’ve not been beaten many times, and hopefully that continues.”

Dale have had a busy March, playing eight games in total during the month, including six in the last three weeks.

Eoghan O’Connell came off late in the game on Tuesday with a knock and Stockdale says they’ll assess the skipper on Friday.

“He came off right at the end of Tuesday’s game with a bit of a niggle. Paul Downing hasn’t really got back into full training yet, although we did have a split group on Thursday as we try to maximise the recovery for those have played the majority of the games.

“This is our last three-game-week, before the Easter weekend, so I’ll ask the players to give me one more big effort before we can come off them a little bit early next week.”

Opponents Swindon go into the game just two points outside the playoff places, but with a game-in-hand on seventh place Tranmere Rovers.

“It was a tough game when we played them at their place, a game of two halves. They were better than us first-half, we were better than them second, and it took a last-minute equaliser for them to get the draw.

“They’re a good team with some good players. Like us, they lost a couple in January and brought a couple in. They’ve changed their formation as well since the first time we played them, so we expect it to be a good footballing game.

“Ben [Garner, Swindon Head Coach] is always going to set his team up to play football and we like to do so the same, so hopefully it will be an attractive game to watch.”
