Rochdale’s first match of the 2021/22 Central League Cup ended in defeat, as Burnley came from behind to secure victory at Gawthorpe.
Ethan Brierley had given Dale a lead early on, when he struck an effort in off the inside of the post from Josh Andrews’ lay off after just three minutes.
But the Clarets equalised nine minutes later, with Ne-Jai Tucker curling home a free-kick from 20-yards.
Rochdale came close to going back in front soon after but Liam Kelly poked the ball narrowly wide of the upright.
Dale were in on goal again a short time later - Andrews headed Matty Done’s cross into the path of Jordan Scanlon who sent his first time shot narrowly over the bar.
Up the other end shortly before the half hour, Brad Wade made a good stop with his feet with feet to deny Tucker from close Range.
And it was in the 37th minute that Rochdale regained the lead through Andrews. Kelly threaded a ball through the defence for the on loan Birmingham City forward to run on to, and he clipped his effort over the advancing goalkeeper.

There was one Dale change for the start of the second half, as Paul Kyffin replace Anisio Jesus.
Done fired a volley narrowly wide from the edge of the area, while, up the other end, Wade, again, made a good save with his feet to keep out substitute Michael Mellon on this occasion.
Mellon then struck wide from close range, before Kyffin had an effort from 25-yards well held by the ‘keeper with three minutes left to play.
It looked like Rochdale were on course for victory, but Burnley netted twice in as many minutes during stoppage time to turn the game on its head.
Mellon headed in a cross to the back post, while Sam Unwin finished coolly one-on-one beyond Wade.
