It Was An Easy Decision - Shaughnessy

2 February 2021

Conor Shaughnessy said meeting with Brian Barry-Murphy convinced him to join Dale, ahead of a number of other Clubs.

The 24-year-old had a number of suitors for his signature, but became Dale’s first signing of transfer deadline day on Monday.

“I’m so excited to get started now,” said the Irishman.

“I can’t wait to get on the pitch, play regular football, meet the lads and get right into it.

“There were a few Clubs interested, but I had a really good conversation with the manager here about the way he plays.

“I’ve watched a few games, seen the style of play, and it’s really attractive football for me. It suits me as a player and how I like to play, so it was quite an easy decision.

“We’ve been speaking for a few weeks now. I had a meeting with Brian which went really well. I met the staff, had a good chat, and since then it’s been getting things sorted with Leeds, and I’m happy to be here now.

“It’s attractive football. A lot of goals, a lot of all-out-attack. Hopefully I can add to that and bring a balance as well, help out defensively. It suits my style of play, definitely.”

After loan spells away from previous side Leeds United, the midfielder, who can also operate in defence, is hoping for regular first team football at the Crown Oil Arena.

“At my age, after having a few loans in the last couple seasons and now it’s really important for me to get settled and play regularly. I think there’s a good chance of that here, under a good manager with good players around me.

“It’s great for me to have somewhere set. It’s regular football for me, it’s not just a short-term fix in the loan sense. I’m looking at the next 18 months now to play regular games.”

Shaughnessy spent time at Reading as a youngster, where he played alongside on-loan Luton Town man Gabriel Osho, as well as getting to know Paul McShane, who he crossed paths with for a season.

“It’s always nice to know a few people at a new Club. I know they are really good lads and I’m looking forward to getting into training now, getting to know everyone else as well. I can’t wait.”
