Gaffer Ahead Of Boxing Day

24 December 2021

Manager Robbie Stockdale says the players have had a good week on the training pitch, following last weekend’s win over Newport County.

Speaking ahead of Dale’s Boxing Day trip to Carlisle United, the Gaffer commented: “On the back of a really good performance and a really good win, the boys have been full of confidence. We’ve had a decent period of time to work on some more stuff.

“So far, the players haven’t really been affected by covid. It’s a daily thing, we get tested every day - we’ve got a couple that are waiting on PCR checks. Hopefully it’s just a bug, but you can never rule out covid.”

And the Boss is hoping his side can show more consistency, as they look to build on the Newport victory.

“It’ll be a tough game on Sunday. Any game away from home in our division is going to be difficult, but we feel that if we perform like we did at the weekend then we’re more than a match for anybody.

“That’s what I’m asking for - I’m asking for consistency. Unfortunately we haven’t consistently been at the level that’s required to win the games. We’ve had moments in every game but you need that level of determination to do it for 90 minutes, and I thought we showed that in the game against Newport.”

After a week of hard work on the training pitch, the players will be given Christmas Day off to spend with their loved ones.

“I’ve done both as a player (been in training on Christmas Day and off on Christmas Day), and I feel that as a manager you’ll gain more from the players being at home with their friends and family. They’ll obviously be professional, there’s no doubt about that. We’ve worked them hard this week, both tactically and physically, so there should be no excuses on Boxing Day.”

Several first team staff missed the Newport game due to covid and the Gaffer says it’s still affecting his backroom team as we head towards the Boxing Day fixture.

“We’ve lost a few more staff, to be honest. I’m not quite the last man standing but I’m not far off. The staff that are in the building have been brilliant - they’ve done extra jobs and taken on extra responsibilities.

“The Academy staff have stepped up as well and have been a massive help, so thank you to them. It’s just one those things and hopefully we’ll get them back sooner rather than later.”
