We Were Impressive For Lots Of Periods - Gaffer On Shrewsbury Town Win

25 August 2021

Manager Robbie Stockdale on Dale’s Carabao Cup Round Two 2-0 win over Shrewsbury Town…

“I felt that we were impressive for lots of periods,” said the Gaffer.

“The clean sheet is fantastic. I’ve just told the boys there that you live and die in football by keeping clean sheets. Because of the ability we’ve got at the top end of the pitch we will always give us a chance in games, so it’s a whole team contribution.

“I thought the first half was ok. There wasn’t an awful lot going on in the game. They put us under pressure with balls into our channels - Sam Cosgrove is always a threat with his physicality. Quite calmly, I asked for maybe 20% better executive at half-time. I thought we could play better with the ball and we did, and I thought we were excellent in the second half again.

He continued: “The players keep on impressing me. I think we’ve got players that can play up the leagues, which they obviously have done in the past but we’ve also got a very young team. The experiences they’re getting is great.

“I said after the Northampton game that we want to get into the habit of winning and this is just the next one. We’ll enjoy it for a couple of hours on the bus [on the way home], then I’ve asked for total focus on the game on Friday - we’ve had a good week but I want it to be a brilliant one!”

The Gaffer added: “For a club like ours, the revenue that could potentially be coming in [from the next round] is important, so let’s see who it is. it’s lovely to be in the hat for the next round so we’ll see who’ll we get. Hopefully it’s a really big team because I think our fans deserve that after what they’ve been through.”
