Gaffer On Forest Green Rovers Defeat

18 August 2021

Manager Robbie Stockdale reflects on Dale’s 2-1 defeat to Forest Green Rovers…

“I’m full of emotion at the minute. I don’t think we deserved to lose the game but we shot ourselves in the foot,” said the Gaffer.

“There are lots of reasons for the start [to the season] that we’ve had but, at the same time, I was hoping for and expecting more points, but that’s an obvious. I’ve been generally quite pleased with lots of bits of it.

“I thought first half, for 30/ 35 minutes, we were completely dominant again. They have one entry into our box and score a goal. They then have a little spell and we struggle to control the ball and they actually finished the first half quite brightly.

“We find ourselves back on level terms and within 10/15 seconds [they’ve scored and gone back in front] and that can’t happen, it just can’t happen, so there’s loads to learn.

“It’s a young group and we only trained with 12 yesterday. We’ve got four out with Covid [George Broadbent has now also tested positive for Coronavirus] and then our talisman [Jake Beesley] goes off early in the first half. The players are giving their all but it’s a work in progress - we’re not anywhere near where I’d expect us to get to but they’re trying, and as a coach and a manager, that’s pleasing but we have to learn quick.”

He continued: “If you go through the team, it’s Max Taylor’s first real senior parts of football and I think he did very well, and Sam Graham has patched himself up from coming off the other day - he had an x-ray yesterday on a suspected broken toe, so he did ever so well to get back out and play. Then Josh Andrews, who has had very little pre-season due to Covid issues, comes onto the pitch.

“So, we might have to go through a little bit of pain in the short term to get some gain further down the line but we’ve brought eight players in and I think I’m still a couple short in the areas that I want to strengthen in.

“And, again, we’ve had another case of Covid in the week with George Broadbent, so he’s missing now after a positive test. It’s tough at the minute but we’ve got to keep fighting. I saw a lot of fight on the pitch, but could we be better? Yes, definitely.”

He added: “I don’t want us to rely on luck, luck wasn’t us conceding the second goal 15 seconds after equalising, so we’ve got to be careful that we don’t feel sorry for ourselves, and I told the players that after the game.

“Although we’re pleased with some of the aspects, we’ve lost and the name of the game is winning. Things are maybe going against us in terms of things off the pitch, but we won’t ever use luck as a reason why we’re not winning games.”
