Alex Newby On His First EFL Goal

26 October 2020

Alex Newby hopes he can add “many more” goals to his tally, after opening his league account in Saturday’s win at Shrewsbury Town.

He said “I’m delighted. It’s something I’ve worked towards for a long time.

“I’ve had in my head that it’s good to get the first one out of the way and hopefully I can get many more.

“I missed a chance earlier on, so I was thinking ‘make sure you score this one’! Luckily I got there before the defender and when I got there it was just a case of finishing it.

“It was difficult in the moment to take it all in because you’re just focussed on winning the game and getting three points.

“We’re starting to get our rewards for all the things that we’re doing game after game.

“Everyone has bought into the way Brian wants to play and we’re feeling really good at the moment. We’ve had two wins on the bounce and we’re looking forward to Tuesday now.”

The 24-year-old also praised fellow summer signing Jake Beesley, with the pair having started together in each of Dale’s last six league games.

“He’s a top man Bees. I get on with him really well off the pitch as well.

“When I scored, he dragged me down and wouldn’t let me celebrate! I was trying to get to the corner, and he dragged me to the floor.

“He’s a quality player, a great lad and he’s playing well, doing a really good job for the team at the moment.”
