It's Hats Off To The Lads - BBM Post-Southend United

1 September 2019

Manager Brian Barry-Murphy on his side’s 3-0 win over Southend United at Roots Hall…

“I thought the lads were amazing, there’s no point in playing it down,” said BBM in his post-match interview.

“I thought the effort they put in, the commitment to play how they wanted to play and the intensity after what has been a hard run of games was amazing.

“Initially, there were tough periods in the game where we had to weather the storm and defend with our lives but once we managed to come into our own and put our input on the game, I thought some of our attacking play was amazing.

“It’s hats off the lads. I asked them at half-time to try and be aggressive and stay on the front foot and not show any resemblance of sitting back, and they did all the way through.

“Southend are still a big team in this division with big players, and they are going to cause you problems. Whatever challenge was put to the players today, they found answers and they produced a performance. We gave them ideas of what we thought might happen in the game, but everything was driven by the players themselves and they took ownership of it brilliantly.

“The lads had to put an awful lot of work in to create that space [that led to the goals]. It takes a lot of intensity, but they have been training for that and they are conditioned for that. They really believe in what they’re trying to do.

“People will look at the result and think it was an easy result, but Southend are still a good team despite their position in the league, and we had to be really clinical in the way that we went for our attacking movements, and the lads were. We got the goals that I thought out attacking play deserved.”
