Report | Dale 0-3 Portsmouth

23 November 2019

Dale fell to defeat on Saturday, losing 3-0 against Portsmouth at the Crown Oil Arena.

The hosts dominated for the majority of the game, but Ronan Curtis’ brace and a late Ryan Williams goal ensured it was the visitors who took all three points.

Jimmy Keohane went close for Brian Barry-Murphy’s men when he flashed a shot just wide of the Portsmouth goal, before Williams then shot wide for Portsmouth after a neat one-two with Curtis.

Keohane went close once more when his mishit cross floated into the area before bouncing behind off the crossbar.

The away side took the lead minutes later after some great play from John Marquis, who teed up Curtis who made no mistake from 10-yards.

Keohane continued to pose a threat down the left, volleying just wide following a Dale corner.

A set-piece for the visitors was played quickly before falling to Brandon Haunstrup, who was denied superbly by Eoghan O’Connell.

Dale hit the woodwork for a second time, when Aaron Morley’s whipped ball in was flicked on by Rekeil Pyke, but the post came to Portsmouth’s rescue.

Less than two minutes after the restart, Curtis scored his second in similar fashion to the first, finishing after a cut-back from the right-hand side.

Morley went close for Dale when his long-range effort was deflected behind for a corner.

Then, after some neat play down the left-hand side, the ball fell to Callum Camps whose side-footed effort was brilliantly tipped over by Craig McGillivray.

Oli Hawkins nearly scored a third for Portsmouth, rising the highest from a set-piece before his header cannoned back off the crossbar.

Curtis almost turned provider when he played in Williams but he was denied by an excellent save from Robert Sánchez.

Williams had his goal two minutes from time when Brett Pitman broke Dale’s offside trap before squaring the ball to the winger to wrap the game up for Kenny Jackett’s men.

Dale return to action on Sunday as they host Vanarama North side Boston United in the FA Cup second round.
