Brian Barry-Murphy On Drawing Manchester United Away In Carabao Cup

29 August 2019

Brian Barry-Murphy says being drawn against Manchester United in the third round of the Carabao Cup is a great reward for his players.

Dale will travel to Old Trafford in week commencing 23rd September, following wins over Bolton Wanderers and Carlisle United in the first two rounds.

“It’s great news for everyone at the Club, and the supporters especially,” said Barry-Murphy.

“From my own point of view, I was still recovering from the Carlisle United game on Tuesday night, as were the players.

“There’s always a sense of excitement about the draw, and the whole point of the players throwing themselves into these competitions is in the hope of getting a tie such as this.

“They were ecstatic and I think it’s great for everybody at the Club and in the town to have something to look forward to over the next few weeks.

“We emphasised how rewarding the cup competitions can be. The efforts they put into the first two rounds were extraordinary really.

“There were players on their knees towards the end of Tuesday night’s game. The reason our players and ourselves put so much into these competitions is for the thought of having an occasion like we’re going to have.

“It’s a chance to pit our wits against one of the biggest clubs, if not the biggest club, in the world. For everybody at the Club it’s a unique occasion – apart from the last time we visited in 1986!

“It’s going to be an extraordinary build up and a great time for everyone involved, and why not enjoy it.”
