Ahead of Saturday’s match against Charlton Athletic, we take a look back at a previous game between the two sides at the Crown Oil Arena.
You guessed it – we go back just over five months to last season’s 1-0 victory over the Addicks, which secured Dale’s Sky Bet League One status for a fifth consecutive season.
Dale needed to better Oldham Athletic’s result against Northampton Town to avoid the drop, but Oldham took an early lead whilst Dale were being held by Charlton.
However, the Cobblers scored twice at the end of the first-half to turn the game on its head.
With Oldham trailing and Dale level, Keith Hill’s men would have been safe, but Latics equalised which meant Dale needed a winner.
Up step Joe Thompson. Coming off the bench a couple of minutes earlier, the local hero scored the only goal of the game in the 69th minute to keep Dale in the third tier of English football.
