Joe Renner was delighted with his goal and clean sheet in the Youth Team’s 2-0 win over Walsall on Tuesday.
Renner opened the scoring midway through a first-half that Dale dominated, and was pleased with the display as whole.
“I saw it played short so peeled off the to the back post,” said Renner.
“I lost my man and saw the ‘keeper off his line, so left my head in a bit and it’s ended up spinning in.
“We were good in the first-half, we passed the ball very well and had good movements in midfield.
“Second-half we should have performed better and kept the ball better. But it’s a clean sheet and win – you can’t really go wrong with that.”
It was a tenth consecutive win for the Youth Team, something Renner puts down to a settled team, and he has formed a solid defensive partnership with James Neild which has proved key to that run.
“With the formation we keep playing, and if Aaron and Dan keep being in the team, with the same back four, it’s turned out to be quite a solid team week in, week out, and it’s going to take something to beat us if we carry on this form.
“If you get a clean sheet, or minimise as many chances as possible, with Fabio and Neil up front they can definitely supply the goals.
“Me and James as a partnership have turned out well. We read each other well, we cover each other well, and communication is vital.”
Dale are now three points behind leaders Wigan Athletic with two games in hand, meaning Dale are in the box seat to take the EFL Youth Alliance League title this season.
“We can only look at ourselves if we don’t win it this season, and I’ve every confidence we can.
“With the games we’ve got left, how many we’ve got at home, and with the way we play at Stalybridge, we’re confident.”
