Josh Lillis Named In Checkatrade Trophy Team Of The Tournament

9 April 2018

Josh Lillis has been named in the 2017/18 Checkatrade Trophy Team of the Tournament.

The Dale goalkeeper features amongst the EFL’s selection of standout performers for his displays in this season’s competition.

Rochdale topped group C, thanks to a helping hand from Lillis.

Following a thumping 4-0 win over Bury, Dale went on to record a goalless draw against Stoke City Under 21s, before also taking Blackburn Rovers to spot-kicks when the match ended 1-1.

A penalty shoot-out victory over Doncaster Rovers followed in the second round, before Dale excited the competition at the third round stage to eventual tournament winners Lincoln City.

Lillis saved penalties in the spot-kick wins over Blackburn and Doncaster.

The EFL says: “Lillis started the tournament with a clean sheet, before going on to be the hero from 12-yards in two of the following three matches.

“The goalkeeper helped Dale to penalty shoot-out successes against Blackburn Rovers and Doncaster Rovers, prior to a late Round Three defeat against Lincoln City.”

Team of the Tournament: Josh Lillis (Rochdale), Omar Beckles (Shrewsbury Town), Anthony Gerrard (Oldham Athletic), Tom James (Yeovil Town), Kenji Gorre (Swansea City U21), Marcus Maddison (Peterborough United), Callum Hudson-Odoi (Chelsea U21), Elliott Whitehouse (Lincoln City), Shaun Whalley (Shrewsbury Town), Ollie Palmer (Lincoln City), Wes Burns (Fleetwood Town).
