Youth Team: Brown Pleased With Performance Against Preston

17 July 2017

The Youth Team fell to defeat on Saturday against Preston North End thanks to two late goals from the visitors.

Dale dominated for much of the game and took a second half lead through defender Joe Renner, but conceded twice late on to slip to defeat.

Despite the final ten minutes which saw the game turn on its head, Youth Team Manager Chris Brown was impressed with his side’s performance.

“I just spoke to the lads at the end then – for 80 minutes we were really good,” said Brown. “The football we played, we applied ourselves to the game. What we were doing formations wise and tactics wise was good.

“Just a bit of naivety slipped in – a bit of DIY football – which we don’t want to do. They stopped doing the things we wanted, the things that brought them success earlier on. It was a little disappointing towards the end, but overall, I’m not that bothered. The traits and the habits that we’re trying to get into the boys were there for 80 minutes.

The opening two performances of pre-season have shown there is a lot to be positive about heading forward, and despite the result against Preston, getting the team prepared for the opening day of the season is the key for Brown.

“It’s about how we start on the 5th August, and hopefully we get a good performance then, building from all of our previous performances. The performance is massively important, the habits, the traits of the club, the character. I’m not that bothered about the result because it’s an exercise to practice against a competitive team.”
