Nathaniel Mendez-Laing Discusses His Sky Bet Player & Goal Of Month Nominations

7 April 2017

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing has praised his team-mates after receiving nominations for the Sky Bet League One Player and Goal of the Month Awards.

He told Dale PlayerHD: “It’s always nice to be noticed but I think the team have done well very as a whole. We maybe could have held onto a few more games to win, but overall, we’ve done well and we’re still in with a shout of the play-offs.”

The Player of the Month Award went to Bolton Wanderers’ Filipe Morais, who netted twice and had 10 assists during March. Mendez-Laing had no complaints.

“He’s done very well with his 10 assists in six games. He also won the PFA Fans’ Player of the Month Awards as well, so fair play to him. Bolton are also flying, which always helps.”

Mendez-Laing scored four in March, including a stunning a strike against Gillingham, which he dedicated to Joe Thompson following his diagnosis with cancer for a second time.

“Scoring against Gillingham that day was special. Me and Joe had a conversation before the game, so to score in that way was definitely a bonus for me and for him.”

With five games left to play this season, Mendez-Laing says the mood is positive and Tuesday night’s win over Port Vale was important.

“The boys were a bit devastated after the Northampton game but we all knew that there were still a few games to go and that anything can happen.

“We knew we had to win on Tuesday and it was good to win in the way that we did. I think it was a very professional performance.

“The boys were all bouncing and we all know what we need to do. We need to win every game and hope that the teams above us drop points, because all we can do is focus on ourselves.”
