Harry Pratt had given Dale the lead, but the home side came from behind and opened up a 3-1 advantage after netting three goals.
Rochdale fought back, taking the score-line to 3-3 through goals from Callum Schorah and Japhet Mata, but despite looking good for at least a point, Dale were dealt a blow four minutes from time as Morecambe scored a fourth.
