Preview: Walsall

15 September 2014

After three games on the road, Rochdale are back at Spotland on Tuesday evening for the first home game of the week.

Walsall are the midweek visitors, with Coventry City making the trip at the weekend.

Dale head into Tuesday night’s encounter (kick-off 7.45pm) on the back of Saturday’s excellent display at Bramall Lane, while the Saddlers will be buoyed by their 3-1 win over Preston North End at the Bescot - it was their first victory of the season.

Josh Lillis (ankle), Matty Lund (shoulder) and Jack Muldoon (groin) will again be absent through injury, however, Manager Keith Hill has no new injury worries.

Speaking after Saturday’s match, Hill gave his thoughts on Tuesday night’s encounter: “We’re looking forward to it, but every game represents a different challenge.

“Walsall have done exceptionally well today [Saturday] to win and that’s the stern test of the league. We bounce into one game and roll into another. While we’re playing well we have to pick up points but it’s hard to pick up points against Sheffield United and Walsall.

“Walsall and their Manager were suggesting that there’s a possibility that they’ll get into the top six this season and I think so. I think Dean is an excellent Manager and I think Walsall are an excellent side – they play the right way, if there is such a thing. It’s going to be a difficult task.”

LAST MEETING AT SPOTLAND
Saturday 31st March 2012: Rochdale 3-3 Walsall: League One

Rochdale were forced to settle for a point the last time the Saddlers came to town, with the match ending in dramatic fashion.

Dale had come from two goals behind to take the lead in stoppage time thanks to Jean Louis Akpa Akpro, however euphoria quickly turned to disappointment as Andy Butler netted immediately from the re-start, cancelling out what had looked like a late winner for Rochdale.

Dale XI on the day: D Lucas, N Byrne, K Amankwaah, K Long, J Widdowson, J Kennedy, G Jones, A Tutte, JLAA, A Grimes, M Symes. Subs: M Edwards, M Holness, N Adams, S McConville, T Obadeyi.
