Ashley Eastham spoke to Dale Player following Tuesday night’s 4-0 win over Walsall at Spotland…
The defender headed home Dale’s second of the evening, netting his first ever goal for the club, and speaking after the victory, he told that club’s official website that it was about time he got his name on the score-sheet.
"First and foremost we pride ourselves on our clean sheets and obviously in three out of the last four games we’ve done that, which is brilliant,” said Eastham.
“That’s not just from the defenders - it’s from the front as well when you see the likes of Hendo and Doney always closing down.
"But from the goal point of view, it’s about time! The centre halves get a bit of stick from the Gaffer for not scoring, so that’s the start for us all,” laughed Eastham.
“We do work really hard in training, believe it or not, but hopefully that might be a kick start for the squad, because I know myself, Jack, Olly and Rhys Bennett, all try really hard in training to work on it, so fingers crossed we can help the likes of Doney, Hendo and Peter V who have been working really hard, by chipping in with goals.”
Eastham has had to be patient for a start in the side with Skipper Olly Lancashire keeping him out for much of last season and the start of this season. However, the injury sustained by Lancashire left the door open for Eastham to stamp is mark on the side, and he admits that he’s enjoying getting a run of games.
“I’ve had to bide my time as Olly and Jack were fantastic last season, but it’s brilliant to get a run of games.
“I’ve got Olly on my toes, though, so I’ve got to keep performing on the pitch because you’re only as good as your last game. I’m focused on keeping them clean sheets for the team and staying at the top end of the table.”
