Report | Dale 1-1 Bolton Wanderers (5-3 pens) - Trophy

1 October 2019

Dale secured two Trophy points with a penalty shootout win over Bolton Wanderers at the Crown Oil Arena.

The visitors took the lead through a stunning Ali Crawford free-kick, but Aaron Wilbraham equalised shortly before the hour mark.

Jay Lynch saved a crucial penalty in the shootout, before Jimmy Keohane netted the winning spot kick.

Brian Barry-Murphy made seven changes to the starting line-up from Saturday’s Sky Bet League One game against Wycombe Wanderers.

Stephen Dooley, Aaron Morley, Lewis Bradley, Matty Gillam and Luke Matheson all started. Rhys Norrington-Davies captained the side.

Dale almost took the lead in fortuitous circumstances little more than a minute after kick-off, when Liam Bridcutt’s pass back had to be cleared off his own line by goalkeeper Remi Matthews.

Lynch had to make a fabulous save from a Crawford free-kick, turning his effort onto the woodwork.

Barry-Murphy was forced into an early change when Dooley had to come off through injury, with Calvin Andrew replacing him.

Lynch saved comfortably from an Adam Chicksen effort, whilst Crawford and Thibaud Verlinden both fired well off target.

Aaron Wilbraham headed a Gillam cross straight at Matthews, before Gillam turned a superb Norrington-Davies delivery onto the roof of the net.

Dale Academy product Gillam then fired into the side netting after latching on to Tavares’ backheel, before Tavares then did well to break down the left and find Bradley, who fired over from the edge of the area.

Verlinden then sent a free header over for the visitors, before Crawford found the top corner with a stunning free-kick from fully 30-yards to break the deadlock in first-half added time.

Crawford then fired an effort over shortly after the break, but Dale pulled themselves level in the 57th minute, when Wilbraham calmly nodded Gillam’s superb delivery back across goal and into the bottom corner.

Wilbraham then forced Matthews into a good stop, after he was played in by Bradley following a fine Dale move.

From the resulting corner, mayhem ensued in the area, with Norrington-Davies, Wilbraham and Bradley all having shots blocked.

Tavares had an effort saved by the legs of Matthews before he curled an effort narrowly over, as the game ended all-square.

Andrew, Gillam, Aaron Morley and Norrington-Davies all netted from the spot, before Lynch made a fine save from Chicksen.

Jimmy Keohane stepped up and netted the winning penalty to secure a bonus point for Dale.
