Match Reports

Report: Dale 2-0 Peterborough United

25 November 2017

Two goals in four first-half minutes saw Dale pick up a 2-0 victory over Peterborough United at the Crown Oil Arena.

Calvin Andrew celebrated signing his contract extension by opening the scoring with a superb touch and finish shortly after the half hour mark, before Callum Camps doubled the lead with a stunning free-kick four minutes later.

Keith Hill made one change to the starting line-up from the midweek game against Charlton Athletic, as Joe Rafferty replaced Matty Gillam.

Dale also changed formation, switching to three at the back, and it proved dividends as they dominated the opening period.

Joe Bunney had the first half-chance, mishitting a Rafferty cross wide on the volley, and Dale were dealt a blow after just seven minutes when Matty Done limped off to be replaced by Jordan Slew.

Bunney then provided a superb cross for Andrew, who should have done better as he headed over at the near post.

Dale continued to exert pressure, and when Bunney’s run forward allowed him to find Rafferty at the back post, it took a good block from a Posh defender to deflect over the crossbar.

Peterborough hadn’t seen too much of the ball in the Dale third, but Josh Lillis had to be alert when Jack Marriott found Marcus Maddison with a through ball. Maddison cut back onto his left foot and fired goalward, but Lillis saved well.

The deadlock was broken just after the half hour mark through Andrew, who signed a contract extension during the week.

Rafferty’s cross from the right found Andrew, who took a superb touch and turned to fire into the far corner.

The lead was doubled just four minutes later, through another superb finish. Dale were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the area, which Camps stepped up to and rifled into the top corner.

It could have been three before half-time when Camps forced Posh goalkeeper Connor O’Malley into a hurried clearance, which fell to Andrew. He drove into the area but fired wide of the near post on his right foot.

For the visitors, who were looking for a goal before the break, Jack Baldwin sent a weak header into the arms of Lillis and Danny Lloyd sent a left-foot shot wide of the Dale stopper’s right post.

The second half was a more even affair, as Peterborough’s three half-time substitutes tried to haul the visitors back into the game.

One of those, Idris Kanu, had a weak effort held shortly after the break, whilst Slew had two efforts blocked for Dale.

Slew was then replaced by Gillam on the hour mark, two minutes before Ian Henderson sent a snap shot wide after a corner had dropped to him.

Bunney limped off after picking up an injury in a Dale break forward, and he was replaced by former Peterborough man Kgosi Ntlhe.

Christopher Forrester had two shots from distance held by Lillis as the game edged towards a close, with Dale defending well to preserve the clean sheet and two goal advantage which saw them pick up a deserved three points.
