Craig is a young defender who was signed on a two-year deal from Radcliffe Borough in February 2009. In the summer months he had also been an accomplished player for Rochdale Cricket Club in the Central Lancashire League.
He made his debut for Dale in the 1-1 draw at Port Vale on the opening day of the 2009/10 season and then hit his first goal against Bradford in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy. Remarkably, Craig went on to finish the season with 11 goals, a record for a Dale centre-half.
His form, not surprisingly, attracted attention from a number of higher level clubs, which saw Dale award the 20-year old a new contract that will tie him to Spotland until the summer of 2012.
Craig received further good news in March 2010 when he was voted the FourFourTwo League Two Player of the Year at the annual Football League Awards.
Dale turned down a reported £400,000 bid from Middlesbrough for Craig's services in June 2010.
