Keith on Wycombe and loans
The game was won on one corner.
We had to make changes to the side with the injury to first of all Jon Shaw and then Clark Keltie just before kick off and though we had opportuniites before they scored once they had gone in front it was game over. Wycombe got into really good shape, defended resolutely and stopped us creating anything. It was very frustrating-we tried to change tack and be a little more direct with bringing Lee Thorpe on, who by the way is not 100% fit having been off for 2 days with illness as has Gary Jones. With the weeks work and preparation I wasn't expecting us to concede like we did and once we had we knew that it was going to difficult. Wycombe came here to get a goal and once they had they showed no urgency to go on and create or express themselves in a footballing fashion. It is a way to win football matches away from home and they are doing it superbly with 3 away wins on the trot and only 1 League goal conceded this season.
Everything that Wycombe are doing is working whilst at this moment in time the things we are trying aren't working and we have got assess and evelauate where we actually are and become better, individually and collectively. We are not ruthless enough in either penalty area and in the oppostion box we have got to start converting the chances that will give us the opportunity to express ourselves a little more. If we can do that teams like Wycombe will have to be more offensive and they will come out of pockets which will in turn create more space.
Whatever we do we cannot plan for individual mistakes and we have been undone again by a corner and gave Wycombe what they came for. You are going to get one opportunity in any match and Wycombe got theirs and scored from it. The corner should have been defended better and one error has cost us because they are such a difficult unit to break down. Peter Taylor is a very good manager but I have a different philosophy to how the game is played but now we are scrambling for points we might have to change tack a little bit especially away from home. We are creating opportunities but not putting them away which is leaving us vulnerable at the back. It goes hand in hand really-if we are scoring goals we become comfortable at the back.
The loan market re opening has got to be of interest to me now because we know how ruthless this business is and I cannot afford to wait for players. Of course we believe in them but there is just a little ingredient missing at the moment and I don't know what it is. I don't know whether the players and ourselves have got a bit lazy with the fact that we have got a squad here. Maybe to find that little ingredient we have to go into the loan market. We want to improve. We are 5 games in, 6 if you include the Oldham game and we haven't seen the best of our team. You are only really judged by results and at this moment in time we are in negative equity. That doesn't diminish my challenge with the 41 games remaining and I think we were in a similar position this time last year and we climbed up the League to finish 5th in the table scoring a lot of goals and getting a lot of points on the board.
I believe in the young players, of course I do, but maybe we might have to do a little shape shifting and freshen and spice things up because there is a little familiarity within the sqaud. I don't like that because it doesn't promote competition for places and there might be a few shocks and suprises with respect to some of the players maybe moving on and some coming in
