"I know we will come back stronger next season and with a few additions to the squad I'm sure we will standing on this balcony again next year only next time with something more to show.  It has been a great season for this football club despite the pain of losing against Stockport.  I'm proud of the players and the management and I'm very proud of our supporters.  I just can't wait for next season."

Council Leader Alan Taylor earlier added his comments reflecting on a season that went so close to bringing promotion.

"It's been a superb year for Rochdale Football Club and it's only right that the council recognises their achievement. It meant a lot to the supporters to get to Wembley for the first time in the club's history and I think that should be marked with a special celebration like this. The manager, players and everyone connected with the club have worked really hard this season so we're delighted to help them celebrate their thoroughly deserved success."
