Dale secured there place in the second round of the Carling Cup thanks to a second half goal from new striker Anthony Elding.

Rochdale boss Keith Hill named an unchanged squad for the game with both bench and starting eleven remaining exactly the same as the one that drew with Hartlepool United at the weekend.

In an even stevens first half Hill's side certainly held their own against the Championship side and looked to take the game to their hosts from the off.

With just a few minutes on the clock Frenchman Jean Louis Akpa Akpro did well to get past his marker wide on the right leaving Shackell on the flank. With space and time Akpro looked to find O'Grady on the far side but his cross didn't clear the defence and Foster cleared.

Barnsley weren't without chances of their own and the dangerous Hammill brought the best out of Dale 'keeper Josh Lillis with a low shot.Lillis got down sharply to his left and smothered the ball at his near post.

With 16 minutes to go before the break a great move from Dale brought the best out of the Barnsley 'keeper Steele.Joe Thompson skinned his man on the right and delivered a telling ball for O'Grady who sadly saw his header saved low don at the foot of the post by the former Man Utd 'keeper Luke Steele.

Former Stockport County striker Liam Dickinson spurned a great chance to put his side ahead after the busy Jacob Butterfield supplied a wicked ball into the Rochdale box, but Dickinson's unchallenged header was well off target, a theme he would continue to the very end of the game.

The second half started with Keith Hill making a change up front.Jean Louis Akpa Akpro was replaced by Anthony Elding and it proved to be the right change at the right time from Hill.

Elding almost got his first chance of the game some six minutes later after a good ball into the box from Thompson, but he failed to read the flight of the ball and it skipped out of play after striking the front man's thigh.

Elding, by his own admission isn't fully match fit but his reading of the game allowed him to pop up in the right place at the right time on a few more occasions and on 56 minutes he did just that. Dale took the lead through Elding after meeting O'Grady's cross with a glancing downward header. To be fair it looked as though Steele would deal with it comfortably enough, but the ball squirmed out of his grasp and rolled over the line.

With 20 minutes to go Dale looked to extend their lead after another quality move by Hill's side.Dale broke through Joe Thompson who in turn fed the pacy Wiseman. The defender got down the flank before stabbing the ball back for O'Grady who curled a 15 yarder towards the far post and only a fingertip save from Steele prevented Dale doubling their lead.Sadly the referee missed it and gave a goal kick.

With time running out Barnsley began to look threatening going forward but Rochdale's defence thwarted every attack with Dawson and in particular Marcus Holness coming out with masses of credit.

On the rare occasion they were breached, the home side failed to find the target.Desperate shots from distance went either wide of the mark or straight down Lillis throat and for all the home sides huffing and puffing they weren't going to blow Dale's house down.

It was frantic in the end but on the balance of play it was a win for Rochdale they deserved.
