They had a slow start to the season, some weeks struggling to get field a full side. However they have gone from strength to strength with the finale being in the League Cup Final on Saturday against a well established Oldham side.
Rochdale started strongly and Oldham seemed quite taken aback.Rhianne Hoyle made some amazing saves in goal for Rochdale. After 15 minutes of play Rochdale's perseverance played off and Abbie Crane scored. This seemed to awaken the Oldham Girls and both teams battled hard.Oldham equalised with 5 minutes left to half time.In the second half Oldham fought back with a vengeance although the Rochdale defence of Sophie Murray, Grace Crossley and Rebecca Leonard allowed nothing through.Oldham were awarded an early penalty which Rhianne amazingly tipped over the crossbar. However this did not deter Oldham and they quickly scored again. This was followed minutes later by a messy goal from Oldham which was scrambled over the line.Rochdale remained with their heads held high and battled tirelessly, this paid off when Abbie scored her second goal of the match and the score was 3-2 with 5 minutes to go.Rochdale went all out on attack and Oldham saved time and time again many shots on target from Paris Welsh, Ashleigh Smeaton and Ella McNeeney. Rochdale were awarded a free kick for a bad challenge, Rebecca took the kick which narrowly missed. The final whistle saw Oldham being crowned as League Cup Champions 2007/2008 and Rochdale settled for an outstanding runners up place. Rochdale must stand with great pride at the way they played and what they have achieved this season. They finished 6th out of 13 in an under 14's league where most teams are at least 12 months older than them. They have finished runners up in the League Cup beating teams on the way that had not been beaten all season. They have also been awarded the Fair Play Trophy 2008 by the Oldham & District Committee and more importantly they have formed a strong, friendly and committed team.
