Rochdale legend Reg Jenkins passes away

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of former Rochdale AFC striker and legend Reg Jenkins.

Reg 74,  passed away in his sleep while away recovering from a knee operation in Tenerife on Tuesday night.

Reg played for the club during the 1960’s and was well known for his striking prowess.  He was Dale’s own ‘Roy of the Rovers’ back in the day, and became a schoolboy hero to many.

He would put fear into opposition goalkeepers such was the power of his shot and he even famously broke netting on one occasion! He made his league debut for Plymouth Argyle in 1958and his first league goal was in a home fixture against Chesterfield; their goalkeeper that day was none other than Gordon Banks who went on to play for England, including the World Cup Final win in 1966.

Reg, was voted Rochdale’s greatest ever player by Dale supporters, joined Dale in 1964 and spent eight seasons at Spotland scoring 119 goals in 305 League appearances, and was a member of their first ever promotion side.

A big strong competitor on the field and a gentle giant of a man off it. He will be sorely missed.

The club, supporters and everyone linked with Rochdale AFC would like to pass on their sincere condolences to Norma and all the family, his colleagues and friends.

As a mark of respect and to celebrate the life of a true legend the club will be holding a minutes applause before the Chesterfield game this Saturday.
